Stage 3 students have been learning about bushfires as part of their Geography and Science study this semester. Last Tuesday, they were visited by one of our Oatley PS parents, Mr Adam Murphy, who works for Fire and Rescue NSW, and one of our Stage 2 teachers, Mr Dodd, who has worked as a volunteer firefighter with the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) for 17 years.
The students had many interesting questions for both Mr Dodd and Mr Murphy. As well as answering questions, Mr Murphy spoke about the importance of having a fire evacuation plan at home, always remembering to install and test your smoke alarms regularly, and also showed everyone how an extinguisher with Carbon Dioxide works.
Mr Dodd related some first-hand experiences and advice from his time with the RFS, with the most recent being the Holsworthy/Menai fires from 2018.
Thank you again to both Mr Murphy and Mr Dodd for sharing their first-hand knowledge, expertise and experience with our Stage 3 students – it was greatly appreciated.
